If you just watched the video, this is the data I mentioned.

I stopped asking questions in the big forums because every answer turned into a brand comparison, and brand comparisons were not answering what I wanted to know. So I started watching YouTube instead. The low production videos where somebody hooks a data logger to their truck and reads the numbers out loud while they drive.

One of them was about eight minutes long. A guy had put a logger on a stock 5.3L and driven forty minutes of highway. He was not reviewing a product and he was not making a case for anything. He was reading his own oil pressure log out loud and calling out every time the number dropped below the line he had marked on his chart.

It dropped seven times in forty minutes. Each drop was timestamped.

Nothing was wrong with that truck. That is just what the inside of the engine does while the dashboard shows you nothing.

Most of the comments asked what logger he used. About twelve replies down, somebody said he had switched to a device built around holding pressure through the transition events rather than just the eight to four switch, and that his own logs after the switch looked nothing like the ones in the video. Flat. Consistent.

Why Seven Drops and Not One

Your ECM does not run two states. It runs seventeen cylinder combinations, and it moves between them constantly while you drive.

Your ECM does not switch between eight cylinders and four. It manages seventeen different cylinder combinations, and it picks between them based on load, speed, throttle position and coolant temperature, changing second to second at highway cruise. Every switch from one combination to another drops the oil pressure inside the engine for a moment.

Why My Scanner Never Caught It

This is the part that kept me stuck for eighteen months, so it is worth spelling out.

An OBD scanner samples oil pressure roughly once per second. The drops during a combination switch are shorter than that. So every time I plugged in, the number I saw was the pressure between the drops, not during them. Everything looked normal because everything was normal at the moment I happened to be looking.

I tried three different methods for confirming my disabler was active. I got three slightly different answers and finished less certain than when I started. At one point I wrote out a post for a 5.3L forum asking whether anybody had actually confirmed that any device prevented pressure drops during transitions. I never posted it. I was not sure I wanted the answers.

What I was doing was piling effort on top of a problem I did not understand at the mechanism level. Not because I could not understand it. Because every thread I had read treated the seventeen combinations as background information nobody bothered to explain.

What the Mechanic Found Under the Valve Covers

The evidence I trusted most did not come from my own truck. It came from a post in a small regional GM truck forum.

A guy had been running a device chosen specifically for full combination coverage for eighteen months. At his next scheduled service he asked his mechanic to pull the valve covers and tell him what the lifter wear looked like compared to other high mileage 5.3L engines he had worked on. He was not selling anything. He wanted the answer and he posted what he got.

The mechanic said the lobe contact surfaces looked consistent. Not perfect, because the engine had miles on it. But the uneven pitting he normally sees on AFM engines, the pattern that shows up when a lifter has been partially collapsing and reseating over and over, was not there. The surfaces were clean in a way that told him the oil pressure had been staying where it needed to stay.

That is a mechanic looking at a piece of metal and describing what is in front of him. It is not a review and it is not a feeling. If you have been reading this category for any length of time you have learned to discount enthusiasm, and so have I. A wear pattern that stopped progressing is a different kind of evidence.

The Version That Ends the Other Way

The same forums document what happens when nothing covers the other sixteen switches. A guy in a Silverado group wrote his up without any drama:

2018 Sierra, 5.3L, 82,000 miles. Name brand oil on schedule. Disabler installed from 60,000 on. Got a P0307 driving home one evening, truck got towed, shop pulled the head and found the cylinder seven lifter seized in the bore. Silverado owners group

The line from that post that stayed with me: his mechanic told him the lifter had probably been failing for six months before the code ever appeared.

Six months of driving to work with a lifter coming apart, and nothing on the dashboard. He had a disabler in the truck the whole time. It was covering the eight to four switch, which is a real event and worth covering. It was not covering the other sixteen.

Why This Is Not a Question of Buying a Better Brand

Both devices I owned did exactly what they were built to do. The cheap one blocked the eight to four switch. The expensive one blocked the eight to four switch and came with better documentation. Neither one ever claimed to do anything about the other sixteen combinations, because the people who designed them were not solving for those.

That is why two guys can run the identical device and one of them still loses a lifter. The failure was never limited to the one switch that device was designed to see.

One Thing to Know Before You Look for It

After I saw it mentioned in that comment thread I went and checked the usual marketplaces first, the same way you probably will. What I found there was everything I had already bought. Devices built around the toggle event, lined up next to each other at different prices with nearly identical descriptions.

Products built around a different scope of the same failure do not show up in the same search results as products that are not. The category and the actual problem do not overlap the way you would expect if you went looking cold.

If You Are the Person I Was Eighteen Months Ago

You did everything right. You bought the disabler before anything broke. You do your own maintenance. You read the threads, you confirmed the device was active, you watched the scanner. You did not wait for a symptom before acting. And you still could not entirely let go of the feeling that something was not covered.

That feeling was accurate. It was not anxiety and it was not you being difficult to satisfy. The device you were running was built around a real event, and it was doing that job. It just was not built around all of the events. The doubt that would not go away was pointing at sixteen switches that nothing in your truck was covering.

One thing to be straight about: a collapsed lifter does not un-collapse. Whatever wear pattern is forming under your valve covers right now is your starting point, and you do not get to reset it later. That is the only urgency here and it is enough.

I spent eighteen months and two devices watching a number that was never going to tell me what I wanted to know. The answer was not a better version of what I already had.
